THE CHALLENGE
- Photographing beer with a tight budget posed several challenges, particularly dealing with reflective surfaces. Capturing the intricate details of beer bottles and glasses, especially with dark beer, required careful attention to lighting and reflections to achieve a polished, professional look
THE SOLUTION
- To address the reflective surface issue, we shot the project in my home studio. A single large softbox was used to minimize unwanted reflections, with an all-black background to highlight the subject. For added visual appeal, table surface reflections were meticulously added in post-production using Photoshop. For the dark beer shot, which presented an additional challenge due to its deep hues, we employed two large softboxes to define the shapes and contours through controlled reflections, ensuring the final images were both striking and clear.

PROJECT FEATURES
THE CHALLENGE
- Photographing black racquets and bags against a black background on a budget was challenging, especially when aiming for a slick, high-tech look that appeals to discerning squash players. Ensuring the details were visible without overexposure was crucial to maintaining the quality and appeal of the products. It also needed to match the videos we were shooting.
THE SOLUTION
- The shoot took place in my home studio, utilizing a black background and a plexiglass surface to create subtle reflections. Lighting and a camera that were suitable both for photography and video were used to be able to minimize set up and production time and top lighting were employed to illuminate the textures and shapes without overexposing the image. This setup ensured that the products stood out with a sophisticated, high-tech aesthetic, while clearly showcasing their details and quality.

PROJECT FEATURES
THE CHALLENGE
- Creating compelling sales materials for beer products required the bottles and cans to stand out against a white background, a task complicated by the need to eliminate unwanted reflections and ensure the product details were clearly visible. Working on a tight budget added to the complexity.
THE SOLUTION
- To address these challenges, we set up the shoot in our home studio, using a white background and glass surface to enhance the presentation. To minimize reflections on the aluminum cans and create depth in the beer bottle, we enclosed the space with available backdrops, scrims, and frosted shower curtains, which softened the reflections. Lighting the bottle from behind added depth and made the beer more visually appealing. Shooting in RAW allowed us to fine-tune the exposure in both highlights and shadows, while Photoshop was used to enhance the green product name on the label, ensuring it stood out clearly. This meticulous setup and post-production work ensured the products looked professional and eye-catching for the sales materials.

PROJECT FEATURES
THE CHALLENGE
- Photographing food and beverages for Beerscene.ca’s Beer and Food section required a quick, low-budget approach while ensuring appealing and seasonally appropriate visuals. The goal was to create diverse, high-quality images for various blog posts throughout the year, each resonating with its respective season.
THE SOLUTION
- To meet these requirements, we utilized natural lighting and reflectors to fill in shadows, minimizing the need for expensive studio equipment. Shooting in our home kitchen helped avoid studio costs, with certain shots taken in a well-lit area for optimal natural light. For season-specific shots, we adapted the setting and lighting to match the theme: dark and intimate for Valentine’s Day, cool tones for winter, and outdoor settings with reflectors for summer. For Christmas-themed shots, we added background sparkle using Christmas lights. One notable shot was set up on a simple wooden stool with an old cookie sheet as a rustic backdrop, aligning with the “Ironwood” product’s aesthetic. This flexible and resourceful approach allowed us to produce high-quality, appealing images quickly and efficiently, tailored to the blog’s diverse seasonal content.
